Learning Focus for March
|
Parts of the Mass
Religion/Family Life
In Religion, students began our focus on Lent with our class leading the Ash Wednesday mass. In class we were to examine the meaning of the traditions of Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving during this period.
Family Life - Theme Three- Created Sexual: Male and Female
In Family Life, we were studying what sexuality means and how we come to understand what it means to be male or female. Following this topic is the male and female reproductive system.
Mathematics-Current Focus: Probability
Our focus in Math before the March Break was on probability and how it can be described using fractions and percentages. Students were learning how to apply their knowledge and understanding of fractions and percentages to determine the probability of outcomes.
Becoming Master Mathematicians!
Being proficient in mathematics involves more than knowing basic math facts or how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
Students need to be able to:
select, and apply problem-solving strategies; develop and apply reasoning skills; reflect on and monitor their thinking to help clarify their understanding as they complete an investigation or solve a problem; select and use a variety of tools; make connections among mathematical concepts and procedures, and relate mathematical ideas to situations drawn from other contexts; create a variety of representations of mathematical ideas; and communicate mathematical thinking orally, visually, and in writing, using everyday language, a basic mathematical vocabulary, a variety of representations, and observing basic mathematical conventions.
Wow! That's what it takes to be a master mathematician!

Science - Conservation and Preservation of Energy
Energy choices are becoming increasingly important. Making greater use of renewable and alternative sources and conserving energy are options that students need to know about if we are to sustain our present standard of living and ensure adequate energy supplies for future generations. Students must also recognize that there are immediate and long-term impacts and costs associated with every choice.
In this unit students will learn: Energy sources are either renewable or non-renewable. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but it can be transformed. Choices about using energy and resources have both immediate and long-term impacts. Conservation (reducing our use of energy and resources) is one way of reducing the impacts of using energy and resources.
Social Studies-Canada and the Global Community
Students began studying how Canada interacts with other countries with such organizations such as the United Nations. We also spent some time discussing human rights and the learning the differences between wants and needs/rights.
